In the age of the EU Chat Control, I no longer feel safe publishing my projects openly online. What was once normal — sharing code and thoughts freely — now feels risky.
My trust in digital communication has been severely damaged. The constant reports about mass surveillance, unencrypted scanning of messages, and the planned criminalization of VPNs have led me to a clear conclusion: I only use messengers for emojis now. Platforms are reduced to the bare minimum and set to private.
Real, face-to-face conversations have become the only truly private form of communication left.
I find it unacceptable that a third party could read intimate messages between partners. Just as unacceptable is the idea that sensitive medical documents, such as doctor’s reports, could be read by anonymous entities. In my view, this not only violates basic decency but also fundamental rights.
If the Chat Control remains in its current form, I fear it will lead to a “great silence”. Many people will simply stop using messengers out of fear. The result could be exactly what I suspect the EU is aiming for: the increasing isolation of citizens.
That is why I now focus on my offline Python projects. At least there, I still have control.
