Today I want to write something positive. I’m not suddenly agreeing with everything – I simply also want to name the things that are positive.

In February 2022, when Russia launched its full-scale attack on Ukraine, large parts of the country’s communication infrastructure were damaged or destroyed. Internet and mobile networks failed in many regions.

SpaceX activated Starlink for Ukraine very quickly and delivered thousands of terminals. This was not a small thing. In a situation where normal connections were collapsing, Starlink became a working emergency network.

It helped the military stay in contact, supported the use of drones, kept hospitals and local authorities online, and gave ordinary people a way to communicate when almost everything else was down. It also made it possible for people there to stay in touch with their families – and they still can. I think Elon Musk simply wanted to help the people here.

Ukrainian officials have repeatedly described Starlink as essential during those early and difficult months. I found it great that he did this. He wanted to help people and did not want to get involved in a war.

One can argue about many later decisions. That is fair. But this early action helped in a real crisis and is still helping. That should also be allowed to be said fairly.

Heute will ich etwas Positives schreiben. Ich bin nicht plötzlich mit allem einverstanden – sondern ich will einfach auch die Sachen benennen, die positiv sind.

Als Russland im Februar 2022 die Ukraine in großem Stil angegriffen hat, war in vielen Gebieten die normale Kommunikations-Infrastruktur beschädigt oder zerstört. Internet und Mobilfunk fielen vielerorts aus.

SpaceX hat Starlink damals sehr schnell für die Ukraine freigeschaltet und Tausende Terminals geliefert. Das war keine Kleinigkeit. In einer Lage, in der normale Verbindungen zusammenbrachen, wurde Starlink zu einem funktionierenden Notfall-Netz.

Es half dem Militär, in Kontakt zu bleiben, unterstützte den Einsatz von Drohnen, hielt Krankenhäuser und Behörden online und gab ganz normalen Menschen eine Möglichkeit zu kommunizieren, wenn sonst fast nichts mehr ging. Es machte es möglich, dass die Menschen dort mit ihren Familien in Verbindung bleiben konnten – und es immer noch können. Ich denke, Elon Musk wollte hier einfach den Menschen helfen.

Ukrainische Verantwortliche haben Starlink in diesen frühen, schweren Monaten mehrfach als essenziell bezeichnet. Ich fand es super, dass er das gemacht hat. Er wollte den Menschen helfen und sich nicht in einen Krieg einmischen.

Über viele spätere Entscheidungen kann man streiten. Das ist in Ordnung. Aber diese frühe Aktion hat in einer realen Krise geholfen und hilft ja immer noch. Das sollte man fairerweise auch sagen dürfen.
